At least they are not self-assembling robots, only self-reassembling robots.

It is possible. If a machine that was built to make replications of itself, the replications had slight variations, and the replications that were "superior" were the only ones to make more replications of itself, then they would evolve. Humans are just matter that ended up in a shape to evolve.
